Pursuing God

by Toni Kulisek on May 22, 2020

You are my portion, Lord;
I have promised to obey your words.
I have sought your face with all my heart;
  be gracious to me according to your promise.
The law from your mouth is more precious to me
  than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.

My soul faints with longing for your salvation,
  but I have put my hope in your word.
If your law had not been my delight,
I would have perished in my affliction.
How sweet are your words to my taste,
  sweeter than honey to my mouth!

                                                                                                —from Psalm 119

Exploring Proverbs 2 this week, we looked at the call to listen, meditate, cry out, and search, in order to find the knowledge of God. What else might we keep in mind as we seek God?

Are we relying on the Spirit? The Holy Spirit guides us, reminds us, empowers us. When I neglect or forget about the Spirit, I can become anxious that I must figure out "wisdom." That's too heavy a burden for me. The Spirit knows our hearts and guides us into all truth.

Are we obeying what we already know? Dr. Tony Evans observes that "the further we drift away from God, both in love and obedient lifestyle, the less we will hear from him. Coming near, loving to obey Him, invites the intimacy of hearing His voice."

Are we "wanting to want" God?

Hear my voice when I call, Lord;
  be merciful to me and answer me.
My heart says of you, “Seek his face!”
  Your face, Lord, I will seek. (Psalm 27:7-8)

Pray with me to have a heart that desires to seek His face!

Finally, rest in knowing God pursues us first. Craig Denison shares in an online devotional:

In Psalm 17:8, David prays, “Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings.” May your pursuit of God be built on the truth that you are the apple of his eye. May your security be founded on the truth that he hides you in the shadow of his great wings. May your heart find peace, joy, and fulfillment today in the fact that God will never stop pursuing you.

Questions for reflection and discussion: Is God inviting you to pursue Him more intentionally? Read a chapter of Proverbs each day; journal what He brings to your mind.
