So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, ‘It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.’
Acts 6:2-4

OCTOBER 30, 2024

In response to the news of inadequate food distribution for the Grecian widows, the Twelve gathered all the believers together and asked them to choose seven who would take on this ministry. They were to be full of the Spirit and wisdom, in a way that was evident to the people of the church.

The selection of the seven was not a popularity contest. Their supernatural filling and equipping had been orchestrated by God; their spiritual maturity was the fruit of hearts that earnestly sought after God.

Godliness does not happen overnight. Rather, this is a gradual growth in faith manifested by unwavering love for the Lord and service on behalf of others. Godliness is not the absence of sin, but regular repentance from sin. The seven had been observed over time to be empowered by the Spirit, and thus were prepared to serve.

We are told that they were also filled with wisdom. Perhaps being filled with the Spirit and being filled with wisdom are inseparable. Wisdom comes from God; God imparts wisdom to those who seek Him.

Godly, Spirit-and-wisdom-filled leadership is essential to the church at every level. The assignment for the seven was to wait on tables. Servant leadership, as modeled so perfectly by Jesus, was passed on through the twelve disciples to those coming behind. The seven were committed to meeting needs within the body. They were regularly present within the congregation, giving attention to the people. As they led by example, the church grew.

Questions for reflection and discussion:

  • How would you recognize someone who is full of the Spirit and wisdom?
  • How has the example of godly church leaders encouraged your Christian walk?
  • How engaged are you in meeting needs within the body?
