As we have considered various aspects of God’s character in the past weeks, we’ve reflected on what it means that God is eternal, love, justice, all powerful, all knowing, never changing, always in control—and so much more. It makes sense, given all we’ve seen so far, to end the series on this note: God is incomprehensible.
In other words, God is far, far more than we can wrap our minds around.
One way we express this is saying God is transcendent. Isaiah puts it this way:
“’For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Isaiah 55:8-9
Paul, in his letter to the Romans, said it like this:
“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor? Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid? For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.”
Romans 11:33-36
For thousands of years, worshipers have understood that God is more than we can grasp, more than we can hold with our minds or hands, and far, far more than anything we could control or wield. And so, with the Psalmist and Paul, one very reasonable response is to worship God. Great is the Lord! Most worthy of praise! His greatness is more than any of us can fathom. Praise the Lord.
