“Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”“
Acts 2:38-39

When we read about the amazing things God did in and through the early Church, it can be easy to assume those things are no longer possible for the Church today. We forget that the power of the Holy Spirit in the early days of the Church is the same power at work in us today.
Near the end of his sermon, Peter addresses the crowd saying, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
Though Peter could not yet imagine such a thing, Jesus’ offer of salvation and the gift of the Holy Spirit was meant not only for the Jews but for people of all nations and backgrounds! Today, we need not rely on our own strength, wisdom, or abilities as we share the gospel and live out our calling as followers of Christ. The same Spirit that filled Peter with boldness and empowered him to preach to the crowd at Pentecost is the One who fills and empowers us today.
The next time you feel intimidated at the prospect of sharing the gospel with someone or feel exhausted from trying to live a life of faith in your own strength, remember that we are not expected to do these things on our own. Pray for God to fill you with the Holy Spirit and give you the strength and wisdom you need to live out your calling. His promise is for you today!

- Do you sometimes forget that God’s Holy Spirit is at work in the Church today? Why or why not?
- Do you ever find yourself trying to live out the Christian life in your own strength?
- How can you invite the Holy Spirit to help you today?
