In 2004, Wheaton Bible Church embarked on a daunting effort to reach out among the most vulnerable in African communities. Heart for AIDS—WBC’s first global initiative— was launched to address the Goliath of HIV/AIDS in Nakuru, Kenya. Over the years, the ravages of AIDS have been reduced and hundreds of lives have been transformed by the grace of Christ.
In 2011, WBC learned of a drought bringing tens of thousands of Kenyans to the brink of starvation in the remote northern region of Turkana. Our church helped fund emergency food aid. Then, we continued a second mile, responding to the invitation of World Relief Kenya and Parklands Baptist (a large, missions-focused church in Nairobi). They invited us to explore how we might work together to transition relief into recovery and belief, interweaving holistic development and authentic discipleship among one of Africa’s least reached people groups.
